3D Character Artist

On-site Wellington, Aotearoa

(COVID-19 Update: Remote work Short-Term)

Mid-Senior level Position

Full-time

Mayday is seeking a Character Artist to join our team to construct a new IP focused on merging innovative storytelling with mind-bending turn-based combat.

We’re looking for someone who can take our character concepts and turn them into both low-poly and high-poly rigged models that are ready to be animated.

You will be tasked with taking these concepts even further by using your experience of character modelling to find interesting shapes, colors and tones - whilst working with the environment modelers to ensure consistency of art direction.

As an experienced character artist, you will also be responsible for working with the animators to ensure models are rigged properly and make iterations as necessary. You will also be working with the art team to develop a pipeline to bring each character into the game, with the potential of guiding future junior artists into adopting your pipeline.

Please note: Relocation assistance will be considered for outstanding applications.

Responsibilities

  • Create engaging and consistently high-quality character models.

  • Design, texture, model and rig characters based on 2D illustrations.

  • Have a familiarity with developing optimized character models for performance on a range of portable devices, and apply this understanding into creating a character asset pipeline.

  • Work with various materials from hand painted diffuse to PBR workflows.

  • Work with the Art Lead and the team in developing character within a specific art direction and ensure their integration into the game.

  • Work with the Creative Director and concept artists to ensure vision for each character is fully represented in 3D.

  • Work with animators to bring each character to life, including potentially aiding or assisting in animations if required.

Requirements

  • Portfolio and/or demonstration reels of body of work at a late-junior/mid level.

  • Minimum 5 years previous experience with concepting, modelling, texturing, rigging and creating characters intended for in-engine deployment or 3D animations.

  • New Zealand/Australian residency or work permit in New Zealand.

Body of Work ‘Nice to Have’

  • Portfolios with stylized assets.

  • Portfolios with both rigged bipedals/quadrupeds.

  • Familiarity with the Unity and Unreal Engine asset pipelines.

  • Experience with mobile, console and portable device deployments.

  • Previous game development experiences.

  • Illustration/Art/Photography background.

  • Demonstration of flexibility in assets or art styles.
